Jesus and His Final Words From the Cross - It Is Finished

John 19:28-30

Throughout the life of Jesus, he is all about the work to be done. Luke 2:49, he declares as a child on the cusp of growing up, that he has to be about his Father's business. Jesus told us that he can do nothing on his own (John 5:30) - he works the will of the Father. He does only the will of the Father, John 6:38. He told the disciples that he and the Father are ALWAYS at work. Jesus was careful to give to God the Father exactly what was demanded. Isn't that what he taught? Give to God what is God's? (Mark 12:13-17) So, what is it precisely, this work that is finished? It is the work that began in the garden of Eden (Genesis 3:9). It is the work that was finished on the cross (John 19:30). But it is the work that will not be culminated in conclusion until we are in heaven. Revelation 21:5-7. There in Heaven, seated on the throne, we hear the echo from the cross, "It is Finished!:

Jesus has done what we could not do for ourselves. He declares it is "paid in full." Are you trying to pay for the debt that He's already paid?

Preach Jesus: His Final Words From the Cross

It Is Finished

John 19:28-30

Three things that are finished because of Jesus' finished work on the cross:

1. Jesus' work on the cross finished the redemptive purpose of God.

  • God's plan for your redemption is Christ's finished work on the cross.

2. Jesus' work on the cross finished the penalty and payment of sin.

  • Our desire shouldn't be that we would be rescued from the payment and penalty of sin, but that we will be rescued from the sin itself!
  • Three strategies for ongoing sin...
    • Confess
    • Resist
    • Memorize

3. Jesus' work on the cross finished the plan of the enemy.

Satan's Plan                                           Jesus' Plan

Steal                                                        Give

Kill                                                            Make Alive

Destroy                                                    Redeem

Final Thought

It is finished because Jesus, The Good Shepherd, loves you.
