Preach Jesus
Jesus and His Final Words From the Cross - It Is Finished
John 19:28-30
Throughout the life of Jesus, he is all about the work to be done. Luke 2:49, he declares as a child on the cusp of growing up, that he has to be about his Father's business. Jesus told us that he can do nothing on his own (John 5:30) - he works the will of the Father. He does only the will of the Father, John 6:38. He told the disciples that he and the Father are ALWAYS at work. Jesus was careful to give to God the Father exactly what was demanded. Isn't that what he taught? Give to God what is God's? (Mark 12:13-17) So, what is it precisely, this work that is finished? It is the work that began in the garden of Eden (Genesis 3:9). It is the work that was finished on the cross (John 19:30). But it is the work that will not be culminated in conclusion until we are in heaven. Revelation 21:5-7. There in Heaven, seated on the throne, we hear the echo from the cross, "It is Finished!:
Jesus has done what we could not do for ourselves. He declares it is "paid in full." Are you trying to pay for the debt that He's already paid?
